Agra is a city situated on the banks of the River Yamuna in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, India and home to three UNESCO Worlds Heritage Sites i.e. Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri. Taj Mahal is a gorgeous unique white marble mausoleum which was built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his beautiful wife Queen Mumtaz Mahal who died giving birth to his child and whose last wish to her husband was “to build such a tomb in her memory which the world has never seen before”. It took over 17 years to complete with efforts of 22000 workers and 1000 elephants to build the wonderful mausoleum. By Air
Indira Gandhi International Airport (known earlier as Palam airport) of Delhi and Jaipur International Airport serve both Domestic and International flights. The Indira Gandhi International Airport of Delhi is the biggest airport of India and handles major traffic everyday. The Jaipur International Airport in comparison is smaller and receives flights from only a few International destinations. Jaipur International Airport is the primary airport that connects Rajasthan to other parts of the country.
Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay Airport of Agra is a domestic airport combined with a military airbase and only caters to domestic flights. Travellers can come here by a connecting flight from Delhi or Jaipur.
By Train
The Northern and Western Railways ply along the Golden Triangle routes. Taj Express and Shatabdi are the most preferred trains to reach Agra and it cover the distance between two cities in 3 hours (approx). Ajmer SF Express is the fastest trains on Agra – Jaipur route and covers the distance between two cities in 4 hours. Rajdhani and Shatabdi express are the fastest trains on Jaipur – Delhi route and cover the distance between two cities in 4 hours 30 from Rajdhani Express and 4 hours 50 from Shatabadi Express.
Seats in the Indian Railways need to be booked well in advance because the trains are almost always full, especially in the tourist season and summer and winter vacations.
There are many railway stations in different areas of Delhi like New Delhi Station, the Old Delhi Station, Hazrat Nizzamuddin Railway Station, Delhi Sarai Rohilla Railway Station etc. The same goes for Agra, with Agra Cantt, Agra Fort, Agra City, Raja ki Mandi, Idgah and Yamuna Bridge railway stations. So make sure to check In advance from where train is departing. Jaipur Junction is also a big railway station but it is the only one in the city.
By Road
Distance between Delhi to Agra is 230 Km approximately and takes between 3 to 4 hours depending on traffic. Delhi to Agra is a great road journey through Yamuna Expressway.
Distance between Delhi to Jaipur is 280 Km approximately and takes between 5 to 6 hours depending on traffic. Distance between Agra to Jaipur is 240 Km approximately and takes 4 hours depending on traffic.
Travellers can hire private cars or Local taxis etc. If travellers want to experience the Indian buses, there are State buses. For Rajasthan, there is Rajasthan – Run State buses (RSRTC) and Uttar Pradesh –Run State buses (UPSRTC) for Uttar Pradesh or Volvo buses which are more comfortable.
By car(own or hire) travellers can enjoy driving through rustic towns and villages, while making stopovers at any place they find interesting.
Local Transportation
There are numerous mode of transport available in Delhi, Agra and Jaipur; which include Metro Trains, City Buses/Hop On – Hop Off Bus, Auto Rickshaws, Cycle Rickshaws, Taxies, Cab Rental and Cabs. Travellers can choose any mode of Transport as per their budget, Preference, and convenience.
Delhi is a great city to enjoy leisurely walks; especially Central Delhi, Lutyen’s Delhi, Old Delhi and some parts of South Delhi. Some Great areas to go walking in Delhi are –
- India Gate to Rajpath in Central Delhi,
- Jama Masjid to Red Fort in Old Delhi, and
- The Hauz Khas Complex, where travellers will find a lake and ancient monuments.
Traffic in Delhi can be notorious and it is advised to be careful while walking down or crossing busy roads or intersections.
It is to be remembered that no petrol or diesel vehicle are allowed to ply in the Taj area. There are Battery-Operated buses, horse-driven tongas, rickshaws, and other polution- free vehicles are allowed to conserve the beauty of this great monument.

- Taj Mahal opens 30 Minutes before sunrise and closes 30 Minutes before sunset during normal operating days and it is closed on every Friday while all other monuments and tourist places in Agra are open from Sunrise to Sunset.
- Drone camera is strictly prohibited inside the Taj Mahal.
- Elephant Ride in the Amber fort remains closed during Navratras.
